Why Small Things Can Feel So Big

Have you ever reacted strongly to something small and wondered, “Why did that feel like such a big deal?”
Maybe the house was too loud.
Someone asked one more question.
Plans changed unexpectedly.
Something spilled.
You could not make one more decision.
Often, the size of your reaction is not only about what is happening in that moment. It may also reflect everything your nervous system was already carrying beforehand.
Poor sleep.
A full schedule.
Physical pain.
Relationship stress.
Constant interruptions.
Too many decisions.
The pressure to keep showing up well for everyone.
When your capacity is already stretched, one small thing can become the final drop that causes the cup to overflow.
That does not mean you are broken, selfish, or failing as a mother.
It may mean your nervous system needs support.
Instead of asking, “Why can’t I handle this?” try asking:
“What has my nervous system already been handling today?”
Then take one small step:
Turn down the noise.
Press your feet into the floor.
Step into another room.
Take one slow breath.
Ask for help.
Let something wait.
Choose only the next necessary thing.
Your reaction is not your identity. It is information.
You may still need to apologize or repair, but you can do that without shame. Growth does not require perfection. It looks like noticing sooner, responding with compassion, and beginning again.
Sometimes the next faithful step is not pushing harder.
It is recognizing that you are carrying too much and allowing Christ to meet you there.
And if you want more tools like this, I’d love to invite you to join the early interest list for my upcoming course.
